Established in 2016, Daryeel Modern Industry (“DMI”) is a furniture and manufacturing business that designs and produces custom-made wood and metal furniture for hotels, offices, schools, and homes. DMI also constructs customized doors and windows for residential and commercial buildings.
In 2019, DMI pivoted toward alternative energy through the installation of a solar rooftop. After the installation, DMI sought to procure renewable energy products and other installation materials via a loan from the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund. These products include additional solar panels, inverters to monitor the solar grids, and string boxes to fuse multiple power inputs into a single output. The company anticipates an average energy cost savings of $3,500.00 per month from the installation of the solar system. Additionally, DMI plans to introduce a new line of solar window products for regional markets in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, generating a new stream of income.
The company aims to contribute to the economic development of Somalia by addressing gaps that hold back Somalia’s energy sector. In 2019, the company sought to increase its electrical power supply to support its goal of extending services to communities in both coastal and inland rural towns via electrical mini-grids. The NHAOF loan allowed DMI to procure a solar system, thereby increasing its power generation and supply capacity by 1MW.
