Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) operating in conflict-affected areas face numerous challenges, including weak regulatory frameworks, the presence of non-state armed groups, widespread corruption, and limited access to infrastructure and basic services. Despite these obstacles, many SMEs demonstrate remarkable resilience and ability to thrive in these challenging environments.

This half-day event explored the strategies employed by SMEs, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), impact investors, and expert partners to manage risks and maximize opportunities in conflict-affected areas, with a particular focus on practical steps for minimizing negative impacts and maximizing positive contributions to these regions.    

The Role of SMEs in Conflict-Affected Areas: Somalia Case Study
The event featured an in-depth examination of doing business in Somalia and Somaliland, with a presentation given by Chief Executive Officer & Founder of TrustWorks Global, Dr. Josie Lianna Kaye on the role of SMEs in fragile and conflict affected settings, responsible investing, conflict sensitivity and human rights due diligence. Representatives from the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund also shared their firsthand experiences.

Investor Approaches to Managing Conflict-Related Risks
A dynamic discussion focused on establishing best practices for managing conflict-related risks and impacts associated with SME operations in affected areas. Leading DFIs, impact investors, and practitioners contributed valuable insights from their experiences, while expert facilitation promoted the exchange of established and emerging best practices in conflict-sensitive investment approaches.

The session emphasized the importance of conflict-sensitive approaches and the development of practical frameworks for successful business operations in challenging environments.
