Kismayo, Somalia - In a pioneering effort to revolutionize fisheries in the Jubbaland region of Somalia, One Earth Future’s Secure Fisheries program has embarked on a groundbreaking co-management project set to bring transformative change to the way fisheries are managed in the area.

Under the leadership of Director Mr. Ahmed-Yasin Moge, the Secure Fisheries team recently conducted a mission to Jubbaland State to monitor the activities of Project Kalluun, a Secure Fisheries initiative to gather catch data. During their visit, the team engaged with the project’s data collectors and collaborated with the government’s National Fisheries Data Collection Ministry teams. A highlight of the mission was a visit to the vibrant Kismayo fish landing site, where the Secure Fisheries team witnessed the bustling activity of local fishers and traders.

During a meeting with the State Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Dr. Ahmed-Yasin formally launched the co-management project, which is set to redefine fisheries management in the region. The expansion of co-management to Jubbaland marks a significant milestone for Secure Fisheries, furthering their vision of implementing a comprehensive fisheries co-management system across all land sites in Somalia. This collaborative effort involves working closely with the Somali government, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), local communities, and other stakeholders.

The Director General of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Jubbaland expressed the Ministry's dedication to collaborating with Secure Fisheries in various areas within the fisheries sector, emphasizing their joint commitment to the success of this pivotal project.

The FAO representative also applauded Secure Fisheries for their collaborative work and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

This significant step forward in the Jubbaland fisheries sector promises not only to enhance the management of fisheries resources but also to improve the livelihoods of the region's fishers. Secure Fisheries remains steadfast in fostering partnerships and implementing sustainable solutions for the betterment of fisheries in Somalia.
