The workshop was led by Jamal Hassan, with assistance from Ms Gani Abdullahi from the Jubaland MFMR. This training event was the outcome of discussions between the Jubaland MFMR and Secure Fisheries about the need to train additional MFMR staff in catch data collection ahead of Phase 3 of the national data collection effort, which is due to begin later this year. In Phase 3, the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member State Ministries are expected to lead the data collection using the capacity that has been built up by the project over the last three years.
On Day 1 of the workshop, the participants were trained in the catch data collection protocol, fish identification, and the use of the electronic data form that has supplanted the paper data form that was used previously. On Day 2, the participants were taken on a field exercise at Alanley Beach, Kismayo where they received practical data collection training.
The new data enumerators are well placed to conduct catch data collection in Phase 3 of the project, in which the Ministry is seeking to expand the data collection effort to additional landing sites in Jubaland.
