In the heart of the Bulahar fishing community, a transformation was underway, fueled by the determination of individuals like Khalid Hassan. Khalid's journey from a community member to a skilled mechanic unfolded, marking a turning point for his community and their relationship with the sea.
“I knew we needed change,” Khalid - a dedicated member of the Bulahar fishing community, recollected. “The challenge was clear – broken boat engines left us stranded, disconnected from our livelihoods.”
With the arrival of the Secure Fisheries Program by One Earth Future, a beacon of hope emerged. “Our community lacked a mechanic, a void that hindered our progress,” Khalid described. “But the Secure Fisheries Program extended a hand, bridging the gap between our challenge and its solution.”
Through this initiative, Khalid and a fellow community member embarked on a journey to Berbera. A journey not just in distance but in knowledge. “We absorbed the complexities of boat and engine repairs,” Khalid's voice overflowed with pride. Khalid and his colleague learned engine repairing procedures, maintenance, and inspection of various mechanical components.
“Secure Fisheries Program funded our training and provided us with auto mechanic tools and equipments to apply what we learned.” Khalid said. “We became the experts our community had longed for.”
Armed with newfound expertise, the two trainees returned to Bulahar. With auto mechanic tools in hand, they set to work. “We've successfully repaired several engines, and these machines continue to operate smoothly.” Khalid said. “Our success stories multiplied as we mended boat after boat.”
Recently, their expertise extended beyond their community. “When a Berbera fisherman's boat faced engine failure near Bulahar waters, we were there,” Khalid said. "We swiftly repaired the engine, uniting communities through shared knowledge.”
Khalid's eyes gleamed as he contemplated the impact. “I'm not just a mechanic; I'm a contributor to change, and it’s an honor to contribute positively to my fishing community and environment.” He declared. “I am committed to carrying on this good work for my community.”
The Bulahar fishing community flourished and rejuvenated by Khalid's dedication. “Our gratitude to the Secure Fisheries Program.” Khalid stated. "They empowered us to take hold of our destiny, transforming challenges into stepping stones."
