Secure Fisheries Joins Global Call to End Subsidies to Distant Water Fishing Fleets

The science is clear: fuel and other fisheries subsidies to the world’s distant water fishing nations causes overfishing and threatens global seafood supplies.

According to the scientists, “An effective agreement must eliminate subsidies for fuel, distant-water and destructive fishing fleets, and illegal and unregulated vessels in line with the aims of SDG 14.6.” Importantly, artisanal and small-scale fisheries can and should receive targeted subsidies to support their livelihoods when sustainable fishing practices are in place. The WTO has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect the world’s fisheries. Follow and contribute to the campaign with #StopFundingOverfishing on social media and read the letter here
