Field Manager Jamal Hassan facilitated a value chain workshop in Mogadishu from August 22-24, 2022.
It was attended by 23 participants from the Federal Government of Somalia, Federal Member States (Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Benadir Regional Administration, Southwest State, and Jubaland), the FAO, and a fisheries specialist, Herbert Nakiyenda, from Uganda’s National Fisheries Resource Research Institute (NaFIRRI). The workshop was designed to develop the technical capacity of participants to better understand the value chain of fisheries in the Somali Region. This new knowledge was applied when participants did a mapping exercise in which they assessed and presented the fishery value chain for their respective regions.
The workshop also sought input of the valued stakeholders in attendance to assess where resources can be most effectively invested in the value chain. The feedback collected will be used as a basis for a national value chain report that will inform donors and investors about the key areas in the fisheries value chain where investment and development are needed. This will help to strengthen the sector, create jobs, and improve access to both domestic and foreign markets.
