Horseed Farm

Horseed Farm “Horseed” produces agriculture products for sale to local markets in Afgooye and large markets in Mogadishu in South Central Somalia. Horseed, established in 1993, is located on the Shabelle River, a lush and fertile farming area. The farm produces a variety of fruits and vegetables such as bananas, mangos, maize, potatoes and others. The farm also sells dairy products and has a bulldozer rental service.

Horseed saw the potential to expand production and sell at larger Mogadishu markets and has continued to re-invest in itself in order to promote continued growth. With Shuraako’s assistance, Horseed secured the financing it needed to install a borehole. The borehole has provided the farm with an additional source of water irrigating an additional 1.25 hectares of land per year. The borehole will serve as the primary source of water for the newly cultivated land and also as an additional source of water on current hectares in production.  This improvement allows the farm to hedge against risk during periods when the Shabelle River is experiencing lower flow rates and cannot provide an adequate amount of water. Due to a new reliable water supply, the farm’s management projects to increase crop yields in current and newly cultivated land from 13,140 per hectare to 13,693 per hectare.
