PASO Colombia and the UN support 1,967 farmers in the substitution of illegal crops, providing legal crop alternatives and access to markets.
OEF’s PASO Colombia program and the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Sustaining Peace in Colombia have been implementing a Contingency Plan to Support Ex-coca Grower Families since November 2019. To date, the Contingency Plan has offered training and cash for work to 1,542 women and 425 men registered in The National Comprehensive Program for the Substitution of Illicit Crops (PNIS, for its acronym in Spanish). The plan strengthens value chains that will improve the sustainability of agricultural projects and provides viable alternatives to growing coca crops.
The Final Agreement to End the Armed Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace considers the solution to the illicit drug problem as a fundamental part for peacebuilding in Colombia. The PNIS works as an effort to overcome difficult conditions faced by rural families which have already decided to quit illegal economies and return to sustainable agriculture.
