A workshop hosted by the University of Arizona explored how foreign and development aid can be used to reduce conflict associated with refugee resettlement, particularly when refugees are the targets of that violence. Secure Fisheries’ Sarah Glaser presented work showing how fisheries can be important safety nets of income and food for displaced refugee populations. Fisheries, especially open access fisheries, can act as stop-gap sources of food and income when conflict forces people to leave their homes. But technological, skills-based, and policy considerations may constrain those who seek entry to new fisheries.
