Assessing North Korean Media Coverage of a Domestic COVID-19 Outbreak

ONN's Regional Issues Manager and Senior Analyst Rachel Minyoung Lee wrote an article for 38 North analyzing the intentions of Pyongyang's decision to announce the COVID outbreak to the domestic public as well as international audiences.

She analysed that Pyongyang was compelled to make this extremely unusual move because it could no longer be contained quietly at local levels, and because of the heavy concentration of suspected COVID cases in Pyongyang, where the country's elite reside.
