Rachel Minyoung Lee interviewed by The Washington Post: North Korea, the original Hermit Kingdom, slowly reopens after covid

ONN Regional Issues Manager and Senior Analyst Rachel Minyoung Lee commented on the recent boarder opening developments in DPRK. She pointed out that during the pandemic, the DPRK regime exploited the situation to further control its citizens' economic and social rights.

Rachel Minyoung Lee added that restrictions on citizens' movements, assembly, and access to external information were imposed in the name of COVID-19 prevention. The extended isolation also exacerbated food insecurity. With the reopening of borders, there is a likelihood of increased inflow and outflow of information, challenging DPRK's ongoing policy of centralization.
